Why Keep Homes and Cars Smoke Free?
Project Action encourages you to make the healthy decision not to smoke in your home and car and to never smoke around young children. Those most affected by secondhand smoke are children, and the effects can last a lifetime. Second hand smoke can cause sudden infant death syndrome, bronchitis and asthma. Secondhand smoke kills an estimated 38,000 non- smoking Americans each year.
We spend more time in our homes than anywhere else, so the thought of cancer-causing chemicals circulating throughout our houses and apartments can be quite unsettling. That’s why it’s important to make homes smoke free, especially when there are children & youth present. Smoking outside or asking others to smoke outside is the only way to avoid the harmful effects of second hand smoke in your home or your car. If you smoke in your home, it’s not enough to move to another room, open a window, blow smoke away, or use air fresheners. When your home is smoke-free, it will smell better, even your pets will be happier. Did you know secondhand smoke increases the risk of lung cancer in dogs?
